The ICU typically had very different workflows than the floor teams, and this varied even from team to team. However most virtual rounders for ICU teams did not prep progress notes, since the ICU residents usually were using their notes to present on rounds. Instead, they did some combination of:

  • Tracking to-dos in the handoff
  • Signing in as RC and answering any pages
  • Paging consultants
  • Placing orders

Given the complexity of ICU medicine, thus far we have only used medicine residents as the primary virtual rounders in the ICUs, often with a non-resident virtual rounder with the responsibility of updating hospital courses.
